Can you install Apple CarPlay / Android Auto in my current car?
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have changed the game for how we interact with mobile devices in a vehicle and, to a degree, how we interact with the vehicle itself. Now, you have found yourself with a vehicle that is not so equipped!! What to do? There are two paths that we have had excellent results with in many applications. The first being a replacement source unit (radio) that is built around these newer technologies. The second being an add-on interface that enables an existing display screen to serve as our host for our mobile device. Another path that has been quite a bit more difficult to navigate is an Android OS based, vehicle-specific replacement head unit. Let's break down the what, where, why and how.
If the subject of the upgrade is a candidate for a replacement using a universal aftermarket head unit, there will be plenty of options. The most common will have a display screen approximately 7" diagonal and will require some vehicle specific parts to fit it to your particular vehicle. In some cases, larger "floating" screens can be installed for greater display space. This is a fresh start with a substantial tech (and safety) upgrade. In many cases, this installation opens up the possibility of adding front and/or rear parking cameras. Audio upgrades are also simplified by the installation of the new unit, should you choose to enhance the sound while you're at it.
In the event that you've got an in-between-eras vehicle, one that has a display / control screen but no Apple / Android support, there are numerous sources for interfaces that will allow the existing display to host the new technology, using existing controls. Many of the 2000's-2010's European models are covered, so there's a good chance that your BMW, Mercedes, Mini, Porsche, Audi, VW, Bentley, Rover, etc. are candidates. Coverage for GM, Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep, Honda / Acura, Toyota / Lexus and more is also broad. These solutions are more of a "cheat code" for your existing hardware, but many do also open up additional camera options, as well. At any rate, the safety factor of not handling a mobile device while driving is attended to.
For the remaining vehicles that don't play nicely with the above options, an Android OS based, vehicle-specific unit might be your only option to bring new tech into your dash. Proceed with caution in this category. There are some very good, well made units that work as you'd expect, which is to say that the Android OS might have a glitch here and there, but the benefits outweigh the quirks. Then, there are the rest. Those that don't fit, don't work or just can't seem to get through a single day without glitches that make you want to rewind to better days.
As always, the quality of installation matters as much as your choice of equipment. For best results, just hit the EASY button and come see us.
